Manually Configure Outlook (Windows)

We would strongly recommend using the automatic setup detailed in our 'Setup Outlook ~ Desktops ~ Windows' article. In the event where the automatic setup fails, be sure to double check for Autodiscover DNS records, and check that this can be reached from the failing machine.

Manual setup should be done as a last resort and may cause issues with the stability of Outlook in the long term.

 

To manually configure the profile (note: this will only work for Outlook versions prior to 2016):

  • Repeat the steps under "To create an Outlook profile".
  • Select "Manual setup or additional server types", and click "Next". 
  • Select "Microsoft Exchange Server or compatible service", and click "Next". 
  • In the "Server" box, type "owa.onenet.co.nz". In the "User Name" box, type the email address. Click "More Settings…". 
  • Select the "Connection" tab. Tick "Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP". Click "Exchange Proxy Settings…" 
  • Type "owa.onenet.co.nz" and "msstd:owa.onenet.co.nz" the boxes. Tick both "On fast networks…" and "On slow networks…". Under "Proxy authentication settings", select "Basic Authentication". Click "OK". 
  • Enter your OneNet credentials. Click "OK". 
  • Click "Finish". 

 

If the above does not work for Outlook 2010, it is highly recommended to upgrade Outlook to 2013 or 2016. Our back-end Exchange infrastructure is constantly updated for security fixes and additional features. It is recommended that Outlook (the client side) is updated to match the same version on the back-end. For example, use Outlook 2016 to match Exchange 2016. As of this writing, Outlook 2010 is 8 years old and will likely have more compatibility issues compared to Outlook 2013 and 2016.

If you cannot upgrade Outlook 2010 to a newer version, you may try the following workaround:

1. Go to https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/
2. Under the Exchange Server tab select Outlook Autodiscover
3. Click Next
4. Input your information
5. Click Perform Test
6. On the result page, click Expand All
7. Look for the second <Server> tag and you should find the mailbox GUID. Copy this to a notepad.

8. Open Outlook and select "Manually Configure server settings or additional server types".
9. In the Server box, type the ExchangeGUID above.
10. Make sure that the Use Cached Exchange Mode option is selected.
11. Enter your email address in the field User Name
12. Click More Settings
13. Click on the Connection tab
14. Select Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP
15. Click Exchange Proxy Settings
16. In the use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange box, type: owa.onenet.co.nz
17. Make sure you’ve enabled “only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate,” and then type msstd:owa.onenet.co.nz
18. Click to select the on fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP check box, and select the on slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP check box.
19. In the Proxy authentication settings, click Basic Authentication.
20. Click OK twice.
21. Click Check Names After the server name, you will be prompted for the email address and password.
22. The username should be displayed with an underline, click next then finish.
